Description: Job Traveling TIG Welder / Bus Duct Technician Job Description This role combines high‑skill TIG welding with hands-on electrical bus duct system maintenance and installation at power generation and transfer facilities across the United States. You will travel frequently to new construction, remodel, and existing power plants—including nuclear and non‑nuclear sites, as well as wind and other power generation locations—to perform inspection, cleaning, refurbishment, and installation of aluminum bus duct power transfer systems, along with structural welding as needed. Responsibilities - Travel to a variety of new construction, remodel, and existing power plants across the United States to support bus duct power transfer system projects. - Perform approximately 80% technician work, including inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of electrical bus duct systems. - Carry out up to 20% TIG welding, with welding intensity varying by project and outage requirements. - Perform horizontal and vertical aluminum pipe TIG welding on material ranging from 1/8" to 1" thickness, primarily on 1/2" aluminum bus duct power transfer systems. - Complete Stick welding on structural steel components when required by the project. - Inspect, clean, and refurbish bus duct systems, including tasks such as painting, silver plating, and general restoration work. - Install bus duct systems, including rigging, alignment, and torquing of components to specified requirements. - Work safely and effectively in tight spaces and industrial environments on a regular basis. - Support outage and service call work where partial or full power outages may be in effect, helping restore systems to operation under time-sensitive conditions. - Follow all site safety protocols and procedures while working in nuclear, non‑nuclear, and other industrial power generation environments. - Use hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment to complete assigned tasks according to project specifications and quality standards. - Collaborate with team members and site personnel to plan work, coordinate schedules, and complete projects within required timelines. Essential Skills - At least 2+ years of TIG welding experience, preferably on aluminum components, or completion of a technical school program plus at least 1 year of TIG welding experience. - Proficiency in horizontal and vertical aluminum pipe TIG welding on material from 1/8" to 1" thickness. - Ability to perform Stick welding on structural steel as needed. - Capability to work safely and effectively in tight, confined industrial spaces and within bus duct systems. - Ability to perform physically demanding work in industrial environments for extended periods. - Proven ability to perform well under stressful conditions, including during service calls and outage work where power restoration is time-critical. - Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the United States, including extended overnight stays. - Possession of a REAL ID and/or Passport to enable domestic air travel. - Flexibility to work varying schedules, including extended workweeks, day or night shifts, and changing project durations based on outage demands. Additional Skills & Qualifications - Completion of a welding or technical school program is highly beneficial, particularly with a focus on TIG welding. - Experience working in industrial, power generation, or utility environments is advantageous. - Familiarity with rigging, alignment, and torquing practices for mechanical and electrical assemblies. - Comfort working in nuclear and non‑nuclear power facilities, wind farms, and other power generation or transfer sites. - Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship in both welding and mechanical tasks. - Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with crew members and site personnel. - Adaptability to changing project needs, locations, and schedules throughout the year. Work Environment You will work primarily in tight industrial quarters within bus duct systems and other confined spaces at power generation and transfer facilities, including nuclear and non‑nuclear power plants and wind power sites. The role requires extensive travel within the United States, with extended overnight trips by airplane or vehicle for approximately 60% of the calendar year. Schedules vary by project and outage demands, and you should expect extended workweeks such as 6 days at 10 hours per day or 7 days at 12 hours per day during active projects. Work may be assigned on either day or night shift, and travel assignments typically last 2–8 weeks, with some projects extending from 3 to 6 months. Work hours and intensity fluctuate with project needs, with the spring and fall seasons generally being the busiest. The environment is industrial and safety-focused, requiring appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to strict site procedures.
