Department Summary: The Social Concerns Department challenges the Catholic & other faith communities to put their faith into action by living the Catholic social teaching through a variety of programming initiatives, structured educational opportunities, and conversations throughout the St. Cloud Diocese. Position Summary: The individual will work on ongoing Catholic Campaign Human Development (CCHD) projects that are designed to break the cycle of poverty , and support the Social Concerns team in related social justice work in the diocese. Major Responsibilities - Become familiar with CCHD and other resources and funding opportunities that are available for local initiatives that will focus on issues of poverty and social justice; meet with current and potential CCHD applicant organizations working on alleviating poverty within the St. Cloud Diocese. - Assist the Director of Social Concerns in implementing a public education campaign to promote poverty education in parishes of the dioceses. This will include writing communication/education articles, and making parish presentations. - Co-coordinate social media efforts for the social concerns department, including Facebook , Instagram and LinkedIn , along with quarterly newsletters and action alerts throughout the year. - Research and identify initiatives and programming in the areas of poverty and social justice and develop conclusions as to the feasibility and applicability of those initiatives or projects for local implementation. - Attend National Orientation in Washington DC, and other conferences as necessary (all travel, lodging and meal expenses will be paid for by CCHD) - Participate in regularly scheduled conference calls from the national office of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) to share project experiences and to reflect upon the projects accomplished in light of Catholic social teaching and reflect on personal faith experiences. - Submit a quarterly work plan and final report and evaluation of the internship experience and accomplishments to the National CCHD office. - Assist in leadership of social concerns department team meetings, using the EOS model. - Assist in the planning and promotion of key social concerns events, such as the Martin Luther King Day Breakfast, JRLC Day on the Hill, and Parish Social Ministry Gathering. Requirements, Skills and Characteristics : - Student training toward a degree in Community Service, Social Work, Theology or a related field. - Excellent computer and social media - Ability to write clearly and creatively. - Excellent communication skills as the position will interact with a variety of people both inside and outside the organization. Community Service/organizing experience helpful. - The individual must be able to support the CCHD values of solidarity building, participation with the poor, and Catholic social teaching principles. The individual must also uphold and support the Mission, Principles, Values, and the Code of Ethics of Catholic Charities. - This position will handle some projects independently and will work with intermittent supervision, therefore leadership experience is helpful. Benefits of Position : -This is a paid position, with the individual earning $16.00 per hour (amount pending approval by CCHD each year) - Individual will receive economic justice training in Washington DC (dates set by CCHD each year) with traveling expenses covered by CCHD - Individual will have the ability to strengthen and build upon communication and/or interpersonal skills - Exposure to a variety of social and economic justice organizations and individuals in the community - Participation in professional meetings and business events - possibility of educational credit/intern hours (with graduate level supervision), depending on academic departments’ requirements - Students will work under the supervision of the Director of Social Concerns Time Commitments : This position serves approximately between the end of August and the following May, often following the fall and spring semester schedules of area universities. The person will work approximately 15 hours a week with flexibility in the scheduling of hours, dependent on the supervisor’s approval and mandatory participation in bi-weekly department meetings.
