This position is responsible for the delivery of student disability accommodations and services. To achieve this, the Director will establish strong and effective collaborative partnerships and relationships on and off campus; work with campus departments to ensure that academic, student programs, and facilities are accessible; and actively interact with colleagues in academic departments, schools and colleges, residential life, public safety, information technology services, student life departments, and student service departments to assist and consult in interpreting policies for compliance and providing support to address accessibility needs and issues. The Student Accessibility Services Director will serve as the co-chair of the University ADA Committee and actively participate with or on university committees, workgroups and projects. Provide visionary leadership in the management, administration, and strategic planning efforts which include: - Provide administrative leadership and management for day-to-day department operations and responsibilities associated with the University's obligations under federal and state laws such as Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act Sections 504 and 508, guidance from the Office of Civil Rights and Department of Justice, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and other guidelines. - Provide strategic leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of programs and services for students with disabilities. - Develop and administer department budgets, program and departmental reports, maintenance of student records, and confidentiality of disability documentation. - Lead efforts to assess department and university learning outcomes, including the implementation of on-going evaluation, feedback, and assessment initiatives. Provide annual data, information, and trends regarding utilization of services and programs. - Serve as a resource to faculty and staff on disability compliance, accommodations, services and programs, policies and procedures. - Regularly review and make appropriate changes to the website and all educational and marketing materials. - Actively engage in the development of University policies and procedures relating to persons with disabilities. - Work closely with the Special Advisor to the President and Title IX Coordinator/Director of Equity and Access to ensure the program's compliance with federal and state law. - Provide leadership in the hiring, selection, training, work direction and evaluation of full-time and part-time staff, graduate and undergraduate students. Provide administrative direction for the work of the student volunteers, note-takers, mentors, and peer advisors. Provide leadership in the delivery of student disability accommodations and services. - Determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations and services to students based on student needs, review of documentation of disabilities, and current disability laws. Manage, oversee and supervise the administration of accommodations and services to approximately 800 students with disabilities. - Establish practices, policies and procedures to serve students with various disabilities in compliance with Section 504 and ADA guidelines. Examples include faculty notification, individualized determination of provision of services to include interpreters, note takers, alternative testing, and acquiring auxiliary equipment for student use. - Meet with current and prospective students and their families to provide information on student disability services, including available services and programs, documentation guidelines, and eligibility. Facilitate planning for future integration to university life for these students sometimes by sharing information with appropriate university staff who will need to support needs. - Perform the assessment of eligibility/accommodation needs of students with disabilities and provide official verification of student accommodations needs and eligibility to faculty and staff. - Ensure that appropriate procedures, processes, and practices are in place to provide for prompt inquiries and resolution of complaints from various constituencies. - Consult with faculty and staff on effective methods for accessible course and program delivery. - Advocate for students with disabilities and mediate conflicts as needed. - Act as a liaison for faculty, staff, students, families and campus departments in matters of procedures, practices, and polices. - Provide disability verification and reasonable accommodation determination for students seeking accommodation in residence halls. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of campus wide events and programs designed to educate and inform the community. - Provide seminars, workshops and training programs to campus constituencies. - Work with Information Technology Services to deliver training, education, and guidance to meet assistive technology needs. - Develop and maintain informational materials for broad dissemination to various constituencies. Serve on university and division committees, taskforces, and workgroups. Participate in university special projects and initiatives. Required Qualifications: - Master's degree in education, education administration, rehabilitation counseling or related field - Demonstrated experience reviewing disability documentation, conducting interactive processes to determine and provide accommodations. - Experience with assistive technology and software. - Evidence of demonstrated ability to work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: - Knowledge of best practices, current trends, and industry standards for providing auxiliary aids and services and reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. - In-depth knowledge and understanding of current federal, state and local laws, policies, practices, and literature on the full range of disability services in higher education. - Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as they relate to student with disabilities and to know the rights and responsibilities of persons with disabilities as well as those of the university. - Knowledge of how to interpret medical, psychological and educational documentation of a full range of disabilities and appropriate reasonable accommodations for a university academic setting. - Knowledge of student development, human development, counseling techniques. - Understanding of change management and organizational effectiveness processes. - Evidence of progressive leadership responsibilities and a minimum of five years of experience in working in a higher education setting or with students with disabilities who are entering post-secondary education.
