The City of St. Cloud is seeking a Building and Fire Inspector to perform a variety of duties related to building safety and fire prevention. The key responsibilities of this position include: Scheduling and conducting regular inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties to ensure compliance with building and fire safety codes and regulations. Investigating and filing complaints and testifying in proceedings resulting from building and fire safety code violations. Performing minor plumbing and mechanical inspections under the direction of Chief Building Official. Identifying and documenting fire hazards, violations, and deficiencies in buildings, equipment, and systems, and providing recommendations for corrective actions. Educating and assisting property owners, occupants, and the public on building codes and fire safety practices and procedures. Reviewing building plans and permits to ensure compliance with fire codes and standards. Assisting in the development and implementation of fire prevention programs and campaigns. To become a Building Official/Fire Inspector, the minimum requirements are: High school diploma; Certified by the State of Minnesota as a Building Official; Certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Building Inspector or obtain certification within six months; Successful completion of Fire Inspector I course; Knowledge of local, state, and national fire codes, regulations, and standards; One (1) year experience in building construction, maintenance, fire inspections, code enforcement, or related field; Must provide own transportation and possess a valid Minnesota issued driver’s license that is unrestricted except for corrective lenses, or able to attain one by appointment. The experience and education requirements include: Post-secondary degree in building inspection technology (BIT), construction management, architecture, structural engineering or related field or obtain in 18 months. OR Three years experience in enforcing municipal building codes, including six months experience in enforcing and interpreting municipal zoning ordinances. OR Six years experience as a contractor or supervisor in an activity providing familiarity with building, plumbing, and electrical construction including zoning interpretation. OR combination of items 2 and 3 with 2:1 ratio of trade experience versus inspection.
