This individual conducts diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on an inpatient basis to a wide range of mental health patients within the Mental Health Integrated Clinical Community (MH ICC). To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Previous acute mental health unit experience preferred. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45# or more), moderate carrying (up to 45#), reaching above shoulders, use of both hands and legs, use of fingers, prolonged walking and standing, intermittent crawling, kneeling, and bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far binocular correctable to 20/40, vision, hearing (aide permitted), mental and emotional stability. "Clinical Duties: (100% of time) This individual has the responsibility of providing direct patient care within Mental Health Integrated Clinical Community. Specifically providing hospitalist coverage on the Acute Mental Health Unit. Demonstrate clinical competence in the field of psychiatry that is based on best evidenced practice. i.e. diagnosis and treatment modalities. Provides clinical supervision to residents, Advanced Practice Nurse, Physician Assistant. Coordinates/assists with transfer to other units in the hospital, other health care agencies or other VA or community hospital. Assists with Mental Health consult's within the St. Cloud VA HCS and via VTEL to respective CBOC's. Is knowledgeable about, and complies with, policies and procedures relating to Public Health and Infection Control. Participates in Performance Improvement activities to improve organizational performance utilizing performance reports, benchmark data. Assists in the implementation of VISN-wide service line policies, procedures, performance goals, strategic plans, and initiatives address any barriers in the implementation of the above. Treatment to all customers (internal and external) will be with courtesy and dignity. Continual responsibility to improve customer service skills through educational opportunities will be attained. Is able to provide appropriate medical care, treatment modalities and plans toward appropriate discharge plans to various age related groups. Assist with the planning and development of RFP's, per Central Office and VISN initiatives. Assists with other functions and duties as assigned by the Medical Director of the MH ICC. Complies with all by-laws set by the Medical Director of the MH ICC. Is available for scheduled on-call duties assigned by the Medical Director of the MH ICC. Supervisory Controls: The incumbent is accountable to the Director of the Mental Health Service Line for administrative responsibilities and under direct clinical supervision of the Medical Director of Mental Health Service Line. Customer Service - Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA Missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent, accurate information. Handles conflicts and problems constructively and appropriately. Age, Development and Cultural needs of Patients: The Incumbent recognized and meets the cultural needs of patients per that are appropriate with their chronological and development needs. The incumbent will understand and comply with federal, state and local environmental laws and other requirements, preventing pollution, minimizing waste, conserving cultural and natural resources and continually improving environmental programs.
