JOB SUMMARY As an integrated team member of the emPATH unit care team, the emPATH Security/Crisis Stabilization Officer (CSO) serves in a security service function to ensure that the environment of the emPATH unit remains safe, secure, and therapeutic to facilitate the highest level of care and service to patients. Under the direction and supervision of the emPATH clinical care team, the CSO will provide direct and indirect cares, assistance, and interaction to, and with emPATH patients as part of maintaining a safe and interactive therapeutic environment. The CSO will act in a supporting role to assist the patient care team in the treatment and care of patients and families in accordance to level of competency, established policies, procedures, and unit standards to provide quality care. Supports and implements patient safety and other safety practices as appropriate. Supports and demonstrates Family Centered Care principles when interacting with patients and their families and with co-workers. Patients of all ages served. Christina (Current Security Staff) CORE FUNCTIONS - Provide awareness, de-escalation, redirection, and collaboration with the clinical care team when an escalating situation may be developing or present on the emPATH unit. - Perform environmental security rounding and identify any potential hazards to staff, patient, and visitor safety. - Collaborate with the clinical team to facilitate an appropriate and reasonable response to behavior escalation, which may include the use of security techniques, tactics and equipment, as well as involvement of other resources, such as a Behavioral Emergency or SCH Security. - Observes patient condition, identifies changes/behaviors, documents patient information in medical record, and reports to the RN or other appropriate health care team members. May also provide one-to-one patient observation. - Quickly identify escalating patient behaviors and employ appropriate intervention techniques to safely de-escalate a situation. - Learn and properly use appropriate self-defense and physical control techniques, when necessary, to prevent harm. - Gives direct care to patients as directed by the RN and established hospital/unit policies and procedures. Patient care activities may include but are not limited to assisting with the needs and comfort of patients to include hygiene, activity, nutrition, and other activities to promote healing; therapeutic interactions with patients; patient safety rounds; vital signs; and gathering patient and family information. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - High School Diploma - Experience in security, policing, behavioral or mental health care facilities, training in verbal de-escalation techniques or crisis intervention is preferred. - Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, and deal effectively with individuals/groups experiencing a mental health crisis in a health care setting. PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, psychology, sociology, social work, and/or related field is preferred. - Prior training with any of the following preferred: handcuffs, ASP expandable baton, taser, VIP or other verbal de-escalation techniques and use of force. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS - Must become certified in the use of the TASER device and experience the effects of receiving a TASER device exposure within 3 months of hire. - A full set of fingerprints in accordance with Minnesota Statute 326.336 is required. - Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and Motivational Interviewing required upon hire and ongoing training provided. - Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider card required prior to completion of unit orientation. - Valid Driver's License and driving record in good standing. ** Starting wage $19.31/hr, more with related experience.
