Position Summary The Department of Life Safety Services at Saint John's University invites applications for a full-time, benefit-eligible Life Safety Officer position. Typical work shift 10:00pm - 8:00am with rotating weekends. Life Safety Services provides security services as well as emergency response to the Saint John's campus including Saint John's Preparatory School, The Liturgical Press, Saint John's University, and Saint John's Abbey. SJU offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits program Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Director and Sergeants, this position is responsible for patrolling campus areas as assigned and attend to matters of security (law enforcement), traffic control, and general health and safety of all members of the Saint John's community. The primary responsibility of Life Safety Services is to enhance the living learning environment through the establishment of security and safety for the residents of the campus community. The 10 full-time and 10 part-time staff members are educators who play a critical role in developing responsibility and accountability in students. As professionals specializing in problems such as alcohol, theft, sexual assault and other real life issues they seek not only to react to problems after they occur, but to be proactive in their prevention. Responsibilities: - Patrol of buildings and grounds, on foot, bicycle or motor vehicle, as defined and assigned by Director or authority in charge, for the purpose of security, safety and order. - Provide assistance to guests, students, employees, members of the monastic community and officers of the corporation when requested or authorized to do so by current regulations and policies of the department, or corporation. Provide traffic and crowd control duties at campus events as assigned. Provide emergency assistance and protection where needed and authorized. - Respond to all fire calls, medical emergencies, traffic caused incidents, breaches of security, criminal complaints and calls for assistance to provide aid and assistance is requested or needed as authorized by policies of the department or corporation. Be responsible for reporting hazardous conditions and potential fire problems. - Responsible for the enforcement of vehicular traffic and parking regulations. Investigate and report all traffic caused accidents to proper authorities as directed by departmental policies. Be responsible for the accuracy and preparation of required departmental reports and records. - Attend all required meetings and training sessions called by departmental or corporate authorities. - Testify as required at judicial proceedings called by proper authorities including, but not limited to State, County and local court authorities, and University authorized investigations or hearings. - Responsible for supervision of student officers. - Maintain uniform and equipment as prescribed by departmental regulations. - May be required to occasionally work as a dispatcher. Qualifications Required Qualifications: - High School diploma or equivalent. - Valid vehicle operator's license (Minnesota-class D). Ability to drive a campus vehicle which includes the completion of the defensive driving program. A driver's license check will be conducted. - Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including prolonged physical activity such as walking, running and standing. - Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. - Available to work rotating shifts and overtime as required. This includes regular weekend assignments as required by departmental schedules. - Have or be eligible for certification by the American Red Cross for EMR/CPR. - Computer skills preferred. AFLAC SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE This voluntary plan offers an additional level of financial protection for you and your family in the event of a serious accident or illness. LIFE INSURANCE CSB/SJU provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance is effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary as follows: Salary Life Insurance $0-$20,000 $50,000 $20,001-$37,500 $75,000 $37,501-$50,000 $90,000 $50,001+ $100,000 Employer provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is subject to imputed income tax (a tax on the value of the premium). You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available. LONG-TERM DISABILITY After one year of benefit eligible employment, CSB/SJU provides disability coverage in the event of an illness or injury that prevents you from working. This plan provides a benefit that equals 60% of your basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $11,000. This benefit may be payable, provided the employee is unable to perform the usual and customary duties of his/her occupation. VACATION Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours. Employees working 100% time receive the following: Years of Service Full-time annual accrual 0 to end of 2nd year 10 days beginning 3rd to end of 5th year 13 days beginning 6th to end of 10th year 16 days beginning 11th year and beyond 20 days FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT These plans allow employees to set aside part of their salary on a pretax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses. VISION PLAN This voluntary plan offers affordable vision coverage for routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames, and contact lenses. Discounts on hearing exams and hearing aids are also included. TUITION REMISSION Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by CSB/SJU. A full time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free educational benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. The payment of special fees is the responsibility of the employee. Full time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year. There is also a tuition remission program for dependent children of full time employees. This program provides a financial resource to a son or daughter for meeting the tuition costs of undergraduate education. Eligibility begins the fall or spring semester following 5 years (60 months) of continuous full-time employment. CSB/SJU will grant tuition remission the next full semester to the dependent, providing the dependent meets the academic requirements. There are also two consortia programs in which CSB/SJU participate where employees' children may apply for scholarships to attend other colleges/universities. PARENTAL LEAVE A paid leave (up to 15 days) will be granted to eligible employees upon the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment. SICK LEAVE Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members. EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free counseling resource available to all employees and immediate family members. EAP counselors can help you identify problems and concerns regarding family, marriage, emotions, alcohol or drugs, financial difficulties, legal issues and job stress. All contacts between you, your family, and the EAP are provided as a benefit from CSB/SJU and are kept strictly confidential. RETIREMENT Defined Contribution Plan CSB/SJU provides a retirement program for all qualified full time employees. The program is administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA). Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following the date of hire unless the employee elects to opt-out. TUITION ASSISTANCE The tuition assistance plan is an educational grant provided by CSB/SJU to a qualified son or daughter of a full time employee toward meeting the tuition costs at Saint John's Preparatory School. The dependent must meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive this grant.
