Job Description Summary To ensure high quality and profitable operation of the division, the Operations Support - FM will learn the day to day operations of the Fleet Manager role by providing coverage to open fleets. Providing support to lead a fleet of Company or Independent Contractor drivers in a deadline driven, fast paced, ever-changing dynamic work environment. The Operations Support – FM will provide secondary leadership to a fleet of drivers with a focus on achieving performance, safety, retention and service needs in accordance with company and department quality, utilization, and profit objectives. Education and Experience 1. Higher education (i.e. two- or four-year degree) in related area and/or two to three years of training in a related area and/or equivalent experience in a customer driven environment 2. Experience in the transportation industry preferred but not required. 3. Management or supervisory experience preferred but not required. 4. Knowledge of Department of Transportation laws preferred but not required 5. Experience and ability to read a map. 6. Experience in developing strong relationships (personal/practical needs) in order to effectively manage, plan, prioritize workload for fleet. 7. Must be flexible and amenable to a variety of tasks. 8. Strong communication skills (written, verbal, listening). 9. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet (databases and research tools). 10. Strong customer service, time management and math skills with a drive for results who can persevere in the face of resistance or setbacks in a fast paced environment. 11. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills in order to implement logical conclusions and make well informed quick decisions. 12. Ability to work independently and self-motivated. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Driver Management a. Provide backup coverage to an open fleet of drivers due to Fleet Management absence. b. Develop effective working relationships, from a distance, built on trust and respect. c. Provide on the spot training and leadership to effectively manage a fleet of drivers in support of ATS and departmental goals. d. Address and effectively resolve safety concerns, productivity, service failures and communication issues when they occur. 2. Retention Management a. Provide a superior level of service to the fleet of drivers. b. Meet/exceed established turnover goal by balancing and managing the driver’s professional and personal needs: home time, Up-in-Class desires, active/valid driver credentials, financial satisfaction (account balances, paychecks, average earnings, and advance requests), etc. while meeting ATS expectations. 3. Service Management. a. Assumes ownership of the life cycle of each load. b. Proactively communicate with internal departments (planners, CSRs, safety, sales, etc.) the status of loads and any issues that may impact the overall relationship with the driver and ATS. c. Effective management for optimum performance; ensure the driver arrives with the correct tools and equipment to haul the load, has sufficient log hours to meet load windows and proactively manage driver ETAs and PTAs. d. Problem solve and trouble shoot loading and unload, utilizing available resources to manage load requirements; border regulations, port rules, customer specific driver qualifications, etc. 4. Safety Management a. Lead, influence, and educate fleet on ATS Safety Culture to meet and/or exceed established Safety expectations. i. Minimize accidents, moving violations and citations. ii. Log hour compliance. iii. Complete monthly random drug and alcohol tests. iv. Complete Annual in Person visits. v. Complete monthly safety training tests. vi. CSA compliance. b. Proactively identify safety hazards within the fleet. c. Organize, conduct and lead Safety Assessments. 5. Production Management a. Identify most productive load offer for driver and guide them into making the right decision to help meet and/or exceed established revenue goals effectively. b. Respect driver’s time by making sure their time at work is effectively utilized. c. Coordinate driver directional requests when appropriate. d. Coordinate mandates with driver within established timeframes. e. Effectively use the logistics broker board to maximize productivity. f. Manage down time while maintaining productivity. g. Log hour management and trip planning. 6.
